CHARLESTON – As part of the President’s Leadership Institute, Drs. Joey Thames and Carlos Garcia recently visited the Clemson University-Medical University of South Carolina program in bioengineering. The visit was led by Dr. Jeremy Gilbert and included a brief introduction to the program as well as a lab tour.
This joint program was founded as a partnership between Clemson and MUSC and now includes five full-time faculty from Clemson who are working and teaching on the MUSC campus, with a full complement of state-of-the-art laboratories and teaching facilities for graduate education in bioengineering.
The unique opportunities for students in this program include clinical immersion, direct collaboration with clinicians and basic life sciences and to work and live in a premier health-care and life sciences educational environment. Innovation and translational research are a particular focus of the program and the potential for health-care economic development opportunities that may arise from the close interactions of engineers with clinicians.
