Clemson CBSHS, OLLI at Clemson create lecture series

Clemson University’s College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences (CBSHS) and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Clemson University are joining forces to create Clemson’s newest lecture series, which will debut during the spring 2019 semester.

Hosted by new CBSHS Dean Leslie Hossfeld, the inaugural Dean’s Lecture Series will showcase CBSHS research and outreach to OLLI members and the general public. All lectures will be held from 11 a.m.-12 noon at OLLI at Clemson’s Cheezem Education Center, 100 Thomas Green Boulevard, Clemson, on the following dates:

Friday, January 25
John “Mike” Coggeshall, professor, Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice, will speak on Liberia, South Carolina, a community first founded by freed slaves in northern Pickens County at the end of the Civil War. He will be joined by Liberia community leader Mable Clarke. Coggeshall is author of the book, “Liberia, South Carolina: An African American Appalachian Community.”

Friday, February 15
Darren Linvill, associate professor, Department of Communication, and Patrick Warren, associate professor, Department of Economics, will present their research on social media accounts created by Russian agencies to negatively influence election cycles and political discourse.

Friday, March 8
David Markus, lecturer, Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice, will discuss his work on Clemson’s Fort Hill property archaeological excavation. Students and faculty have been working to complete the history of the home to include the experiences of the enslaved African Americans who lived and worked at Fort Hill.

Friday, March 29
Travers Scott, associate professor, Department of Communication, will speak on his research into the realities of technology addictions, technology-induced sicknesses and what he calls “technopathologies.” He is author of the book, “Pathology and Technology: Killer Apps and Sick Users.”

The Dean’s Lecture Series will be offered each spring and fall. The lectures are free and open to current OLLI members as well as CBSHS faculty, staff and students and the general public. For more information, call OLLI at Clemson at (864) 633-5242.
