CLEMSON — Clemson University conferred more than 1,000 degrees during the summer graduation ceremony at Friday in Littlejohn Coliseum.

Students from the university’s seven colleges participated in Friday’s ceremony. A doctoral hooding ceremony for approximately 85 Ph.D. candidates was held Thursday in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts.

Included among the graduates were a pair of inaugural cohorts from specialized master’s degree programs.

In 2016, Clemson began a pilot program in partnership with AIG to develop a civil engineering graduate program for risk engineering and system analytics. Nine members who made up the first cohort graduated Friday, including three who flew in for the commencement ceremony from India and one from Canada.

An online-only program requiring 31 credit hours for students will be open to the general public this fall. The College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences is actively recruiting and enrolling students for the program whose home base is the Risk Engineering and System Analytics Center at the CU-ICAR campus in Greenville.

The inaugural nine-member class from the master’s program for resilient urban design also graduated. The 36-credit degree program attracts students primarily with prior design skills in architecture, landscape architecture or city and regional planning. The program — part of the Clemson Design Center in Charleston — prepares its graduates to engage complex cultural, market and government policy forces through sustainable and resilient urban form. The program held a special hooding ceremony Monday in Charleston.

Following the presentation of diplomas, graduates heard a brief message from Alumni Association President-Elect Greg Morton. He urged the newest class of Clemson graduates to be active with their alma mater.

“Come back to Clemson,” he said. “As often as you can make it, try and return home because you’re now a part of this special family. We’ve been No. 1 in football two of the last three years, but now we want to be No. 1 in alumni involvement as well.”
