The National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition recently recognized Clemson University’s Bridge to Clemson program during its national conference. The John N. Gardner Institutional Excellence for Students in Transition Award is presented annually to institutions that have designed and implemented outstanding collaborative initiatives enhancing significant transitions during the undergraduate experience.

Award recipients demonstrate the effectiveness of initiatives in supporting student success, learning and development during transition points beyond the first college year and responding to unique institutional needs.

Bridge is an equal partnership between Clemson and Tri-County Technical College (TCTC). Enrollment management, student affairs, academic support and advising teams collaborate closely to provide students transitioning to Clemson with various resources, including an orientation for transfer students, mentorship programs and staff dedicated to optimizing success.

“This path is made possible by the dedicated faculty and staff at both Clemson and TCTC who work tirelessly to ensure their students have the educational tools and support services they need to succeed,” said Associate Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Learning Sean Brittain of the award. “With the strong foundation we’ve built over the past two decades, the Bridge to Clemson program will continue to provide students with the highest quality of academic advising and academic support while delivering the No. 1 student experience.”

Brittain also recognized Clemson’s former director of Bridge and Transfer Programs, Mary von Kaenel, for her pivotal role in nurturing solid relationships with TCTC and units across Clemson over the last decade. She retired earlier this year.
