CLEMSON – Amit Bein has been appointed acting chair of the department of history and geography in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities at Clemson University.

Bein is a professor of Middle Eastern studies and has served as the coordinator of the department’s undergraduate program.

“Amit Bein is a superb teacher, scholar and administrator, and will do an outstanding job as the new acting chair of the department of history and geography,” said James Burns, the College’s interim associate dean for academic affairs.

Bein, an expert on late Ottoman history and the early Turkish Republic, teaches courses on the history of the modern Middle East. His new appointment was effective March 1.

“I am excited for the opportunity to serve as the acting chair of the department of history and geography,” Bein said. “Our faculty has a well-deserved reputation for innovative research and excellence in teaching. My task is to facilitate the continued production of path-breaking scholarship and to provide stimulating learning experiences for our students.”

Bein came to Clemson in 2006 as an assistant professor of history and served as associate professor from 2012 until his promotion to full professor in 2018.

He earned his Ph.D. in Near Eastern studies from Princeton University in 2006 after earning a master’s degree in history and bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern and African history, both from Tel Aviv University.

Bein’s most recent book, “Kemalist Turkey and the Middle East: International Relations in the Interwar Period” (Cambridge University Press, 2017), examines the engagement and multifaceted ties between Turkey and the Middle East between the two world wars.

He also has authored many articles and conference papers on the Middle East, focusing particularly on Ottoman Turkey. His current research project examines the impact of World War II on Turkey’s society, culture and politics.

Bein succeeds Burns, who served as chair of the department of history and geography from 2015 to 2020, and advanced to interim associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities in December 2019.
