Communication faculty member Andrew Pyle has been named Interim Director of the National Scholars Program at Clemson University, effective December 1.
Pyle takes over for Sarah Winslow, who stepped down after leading the program since 2015 to become the inaugural Dean of the Honors College.
Andrew is an exemplary student-focused educator, a thoughtful leader, a renowned scholar, and an enthusiastic champion for this program and our Scholars. I can’t think of anyone better suited to lead the National Scholars Program through this leadership transition.
Sarah Winslow, Dean, Clemson University Honors College
The National Scholars Program offers unmatched learning experiences to a select group of high academic and community service-oriented incoming students every year. Scholars receive dedicated academic, personal and professional development opportunities throughout their four years on campus.
Pyle has been actively involved with the program and its selection committee since 2018, through which he interviewed three of its current cohorts. He had also already been planning an upcoming study abroad for first-year scholars this summer.
This is a dream come true. The opportunity to teach, advise and conduct research with Honors students has been the most fulfilling part of my work as a professor. Having a chance now to work so closely with the National Scholars Program is a great privilege. I look forward to working alongside this amazing team of students, staff, and faculty over the next few months.

Pyle is also heavily engaged with students in the Honors College, dating back to teaching his first Honors course in 2016. Since then, he’s led several other Honors courses and seminars, reviewed admission applications, mentored EUREKA! students, served as an Honors thesis adviser and Dixon Senior Fellow and assisted in developing a new first-year seminar program for incoming Honors students.
He received the Douglas W. Bradbury Award for outstanding contributions to the Clemson University Honors College in 2022.
