AIS student chapter opens doors to information systems opportunities

Information technology permeates virtually every aspect of 21st century business. That’s why the Association for Information Systems (AIS) student chapter at Clemson University welcomes students of all majors to join their organization.

“Our AIS chapter has mostly a cross-section of business and computer science majors in its membership, but we welcome any major to learn and appreciate the impact information technology has in the success of modern business,” said Madison Leopard, president of the Clemson AIS chapter.

AIS student chapters are an extension of the global professional AIS organization which caters to individuals and organizations that lead research, teaching, practice and the study of information systems.

In addition to furthering the study, application and advancement of information systems, Clemson’s student chapter provides career enhancement, professional networking opportunities and practical experience in problem solving through AIS team competitions.

“Our chapter is hosting a series of Tech Talks this semester where industry practitioners and human resources professionals talk about the various career opportunities within some of their companies,” Madison said. “It’s a great opportunity for members to learn about careers they may not be aware of and to network with their peers and the speakers.”

Tech Talks still to come this semester, include

Oct. 3: Norfolk Southern – David Peeples Ballroom, 2nd Floor, Hendrix Center, 5:30 p.m.

Oct. 17: IBM – Watt Family Innovation Center, Room 106, 5:30 p.m.

Nov. 1: Michelin – Sirrine Hall, Room 302, 5:30 p.m.

Case study and problem-solving team competitions are also available this fall through the student chapter. In October, student chapters around the country will be given topics in areas of block chain, data analysis, computation, and systems development, to name a few. Madison said Clemson’s chapter is looking for team members to compete against AIS students at other universities.

“These will be interdisciplinary student groups that will have the opportunity to develop and showcase their skills against other AIS student chapters from around the country,” she said. “We are currently looking for students interested in being on these teams.”

Winners of the various competitions will be announced at the annual AIS Student Leadership Conference, April 11-13, 2019, at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Marten Risius, assistant professor of management and advisor to the AIS student group, said membership in a professional organization helps students better acclimate to the career paths they are pursuing.

“As members of the local chapter, students are more engaged in information systems and have the resources that they may not find solely in a classroom setting. Membership also helps develop leadership and additional learning opportunities that involve real-world problem solving experiences,” Risius said. “Participation helps students be better prepared for the business world and actively apply their acquired knowledge in a team setting.”
