The Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine marked a historic milestone last Friday as faculty and staff personally called each of the 80 students selected for the inaugural class to offer them a seat. The moment, punctuated by a range of heartfelt reactions, represented the culmination of years of planning and preparation. Even more profoundly, it marks the beginning of a bold new chapter in advancing animal and public health across South Carolina and beyond. The calls affirmed Clemson University’s commitment to addressing critical veterinary workforce shortages and expanding access to high-quality veterinary education.
“This was far more than an admissions milestone,” said Founding Dean Steven Marks. “It was a defining moment for our University and for the state we serve. Speaking directly with each student reminded us that this college was created to train the next generation of highly-skilled veterinary clinicians and send them out into communities around the state to serve where they are needed most.”

The inaugural cohort represents a highly competitive group of scholars chosen for their academic excellence, leadership and commitment to service. This first class, comprised of 60 in-state and 20 out-of-state students, will help shape the culture and traditions of the college for generations to come.
“Our founding class will always hold a special place in Clemson’s and the State’s history,” said Marks. “They are pioneers. Their passion, resilience and dedication to animal and human health embody the very mission of this college. Together, we are building something that will have a lasting impact for decades.”

With the selection of its first 80 students, the state’s first college of veterinary medicine has moved from vision to reality, launching a program poised to advance research, education and clinical care while strengthening the University’s land-grant mission. Go Tigers!
