Jorge Luis García appointed as faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economics Research

Clemson University assistant professor Jorge Luis García has earned a prestigious appointment as a faculty research fellow with the National Bureau of Economics (NBER), making him one of just two members of the NBER in the John E. Walker Department of Economics at the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business.

García, an applied micro-economist who joined the college in 2018, was appointed as part of a group of 53 faculty research fellows announced by the NBER in May 2023. According to the NBER, these appointments are recommended by directors of the organization’s 20 research programs, who consult with steering committees of leading scholars. The NBER president appoints faculty research fellows like Garcia; nationwide, the NBER currently has 347 faculty research fellows.

García’s research on early childhood education, fertility and labor force participation will pertain to the NBER’s Program on Children, which studies the determinants of children’s well-being by leveraging economic tools and considering the roles of education, public and private health insurance and transfer programs. The Program on Children also examines the long-term economic and social consequences of early life circumstances.

“As a faculty research fellow, I’ll be able to collaborate with a group of scholars who are actively researching in my field,” explained García. “In-person interaction with these researchers, and the opportunity to circulate my work among these colleagues, definitely will impact my professional development.”

García will be eligible for an appointment as a research associate with the NBER once he achieves tenure.

The NBER, headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., is comprised of a network of more than 1,700 economists in primary appointments at North American colleges and universities. The private, nonpartisan organization investigates and analyzes significant economic issues, publishing more than 1,200 working papers and convening more than 120 conferences annually. Forty-three current or former NBER affiliates have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, and 13 have chaired the President’s Council of Economic Advisors.
