Members of the Student Veterans Association (SVA) and SALUTE Honor Society have joined together to host a fundraiser golf tournament at Oconee Country Club on Friday, Nov. 12. The event will begin with check-in, raffle entries and a silent auction at 8 a.m., followed by a shotgun start to the tournament at 9 a.m.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the establishment of an endowment for the Mike M. Smalley Veterans Memorial Scholarship, which provides $1,000 in financial aid each year to two undergraduate student veterans. Mike Smalley was a United States Navy veteran and longtime Clemson Tigers fan who passed away from lung cancer in 2017.
Matt Morris serves as president of the SVA, which was named National Chapter of the Year by the Student Veterans of America in 2020. He is excited to be hosting the tournament and raising money to memorialize Smalley’s legacy.
“Our goal is to raise money to establish this endowment,” he said. “The reason it’s a goal is so that years and years down the road the family won’t have to keep putting money into the account. We want the scholarship to be given out indefinitely to student veterans here at Clemson.”
