CLEMSON — Rama Podila (PhD physics 2011), an assistant professor of physics and astronomy, was named a 2019 Roaring10 recipient by the Clemson University Young Alumni Council. This award recognizes young alumni who have made an impact in business, leadership, community, educational and/or philanthropic endeavors.
The author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and two patents, Podila conducts research at the interface of physics, biology, and nanoscience. His lab aims to identify novel optical and electrical phenomena at the nanoscale that could be transformed into high impact and commercially and environmentally viable products such as batteries, supercapacitors, triboelectric nanogenerators, and biosensors.
An enthusiastic educator, he helped launch two new courses — Electrochemistry and Methods of Spectroscopy. He played a key role in establishing the Clemson Nanomaterials Institute, and he serves as the lead organizer of Nano Day at Roper Mountain Science Center annually. He was also recently selected as a “Faculty Fellow” by His Holiness Dalai Lama to teach physics to Buddhist monks.
