The Department of Management hosted its annual Voices of Experience event this spring at the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business. This event was created to connect students with industry professionals to gain insights into their career journeys.
The panel consisted of first-generation entrepreneur Tom Dillard; Lawerence Gillard, Jr., an American actor; Diane Hardy, nurse anesthetist turned entrepreneur; Shay Houser, an award-winning 6x founder; and David Peyton, an experienced consultant.
The event started with each panelist talking about their career journeys and the lessons they learned during their time in their respective fields. The panelists gave students advice about the importance of creativity and innovations, building a strong network, pivoting in different directions and adapting to new changes in the industry. A Q&A panel ended the event, opening up the floor for students to ask more specific questions to each panelist.
Rebekah Dorminy, a senior accounting major, talks about how impactful the experience is for her as a panelist. “I was really inspired by all the lessons these entrepreneurs shared from their journeys. I love it when we get to hear from individuals who have tried a lot of things, faced failure and struggles, and succeeded in the end through pure determination and grit,” she explains. “Each speaker had so much passion for what they do and a true heart to give back and help others to succeed. I am so glad Clemson is able to host these kinds of events.”
Voices of Experiences is one of many events the Department and College organize to prepare students for a global marketplace.
