Myles Surrett wasn’t necessarily groomed for the student affairs profession. In fact, shortly after graduating from nearby Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina, he thought his calling was to be a German history professor. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont, a private, liberal arts institution where he was only allowed to speak German for a six- or eight-week period as part of the intensive language program. But he left the program and ended up with his wife in Birmingham, Alabama, working in the nonprofit sector.
Surrett finally secured a place in higher education after attending graduate school at George Washington University. He worked in a student activities role and ultimately outdoor and leadership programs. Surrett joined the Clemson team in August 2017 as its associate director in Student Involvement and Leadership, where he helps coordinate and manage a large volume of student organizations. He was honored this spring with an award for outstanding leadership contributions from the South Carolina board of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).
