Editor’s note: This is the latest installment in our series of “Student Affairs Talk” podcasts. In it, Communications Director for Student Affairs Philip Sikes visits with various leaders from the staff and student communities. This week’s featured guest is John Wilde, a sophomore engineering major and veteran of the U.S. Navy.

John Wilde is a student veteran from Hartsville, South Carolina who spent eight years in the U.S. Navy. He is majoring in engineering.

John Wilde is a fourth-generation Clemson Tiger. Following a bit of a non-traditional path, he enrolled as a transfer student in the fall of 2018 and joined in the same steps his father, grandfather and great-grandfather followed for their undergraduate educations. Wilde is also a student veteran, having served eight years in the U.S. Navy, primarily as an operations specialist.

Following three deployments and facing a tough decision to either re-enlist for another four years or leave the Navy in order to finish his college education, Wilde made a choice to apply to Clemson. He had previously started as a student at Francis Marion University following his senior year at Hartsville High School in 2008.

Wilde is a part of Clemson’s chapter of the Student Veterans of America (SVA), serving as events coordinator. He looks forward to this weekend’s fifth annual Walk for Veterans, which is set for Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. Wilde hopes to be part of a record crowd on hand to help raise money for Clemson’s student veteran scholarship endowment.
