Clemson University has expanded its research security program and renamed the Office of Export Compliance and Research Security to the Office of Research Security (ORS).
The new name reflects Clemson’s expanding research security mission, which now encompasses export controls, research information security, controlled unclassified information (CUI), classified research security, international research risk management and compliance with emerging federal research security requirements.
ORS leads Clemson’s institutional research security program, helping the university meet federal requirements while protecting research from foreign government interference and the exploitation of scientific innovation. A team of security professionals at ORS provides the strategic framework and compliance expertise necessary to navigate complex federal, state and university regulations for international collaboration and scientific partnerships. ORS serves as the program office for the university’s Research Information Security Policy, which outlines the responsible and lawful collection, storage and transmission of data obtained through research.
The office works with faculty early in the research lifecycle to identify potential security requirements before they become barriers to research. Clemson University researchers are encouraged to consult with ORS experts early when:
- Planning international collaborations, including co-authorships or partnerships with foreign institutions;
- Preparing a proposal for a Department of War contract or subcontract, or other research with sponsor-imposed security requirements;
- Working with restricted, controlled or otherwise sensitive research data;
- Receiving contracts with publication, access or participation restrictions;
- Traveling internationally with research equipment, data or software;
- Shipping research materials, equipment or data outside the United States;
- Hiring or hosting foreign nationals in research roles; or
- Engaging in research that may involve export controls, controlled unclassified information (CUI) or other research security considerations.

The office is led by Kelley Gonzales, director of research security. A retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, Gonzales brings more than two decades of experience in cybersecurity, information assurance and regulatory compliance. Gonzales has an MBA from Regis University and an MSIT from University of North Carolina Charlotte.
Gonzales said ORS is built on a simple approach: integrating research security throughout the research lifecycle.
“Research security works best when it’s integrated into the entire research lifecycle. Our goal is to be a visible, trusted partner across the university by providing clear guidance, consistent support and predictable processes that help faculty and campus partners move research forward with confidence,” she said.
ORS has a dedicated team of research security professionals to provide advisory support to Clemson researchers on matters related to international collaboration, classified research governance, controlled unclassified information (CUI) protection and research security.
Christian Enloe, research information security project manager, leads Clemson’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) compliance efforts, advising campus partners on security requirements, documentation and institutional readiness for federally sponsored research. Prior to joining Clemson University, he spent more than 20 years at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), leading cybersecurity and compliance efforts supporting federal research and technology programs. Enloe holds a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University.
Justin Lamorie, Facility Security Officer (FSO) and research info security analyst, is a seasoned information security professional with a background in federal clearance processes and defense-related security programs. Now serving as FSO at Clemson, he oversees classified and regulated research compliance, including CUI protection, personnel security and export control. Lamorie holds a master’s degree in computer science from the Naval Postgraduate School.
Robert Peacock, export control manager, directs export compliance and research risk reviews supporting Clemson’s sponsored research and global engagement activities. Before joining Clemson, Peacock established research security and export control programs at James Madison University and served as assistant professor and principal investigator on three federally funded international cybersecurity projects at Florida International University.
Tyler Williams, export control and research security analyst, supports compliance with federal export regulations related to foreign travel, visa applications and sponsored research activities. Williams previously served in the U.S. Air Force as an operations intelligence analyst. Williams ‘19 is a graduate of the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business.
