Meet Jonathan Fogle, DVM, PhD, DACVIM (SAIM), one of the newest faculty members and the acting department chair at the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (PCVM). He says he jumped at the opportunity to come to the PCVM.

“I grew up in South Carolina,” said Fogle. “Being able to return to my home state to be part of starting a new veterinary college is an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

Fogle earned his DVM from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. He completed the clinician-investigator residency and PhD program at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Fogle is boarded in small animal internal medicine and holds a PhD in immunology. He hopes his background will benefit DVM students and the PCVM as a whole.

“I love veterinary medicine; there is always something new and different in this career.  I look forward to sharing my love of comparative immunology with the veterinary students in the classroom and in the laboratory.”

Fogle has a passion for research. His interests are in allergy, autoimmunity and immune dysfunction, specifically, understanding how viruses, parasites and tumors escape immune recognition. Additionally, his clinical interests include new ways to identify autoimmunity and autoinflammatory diseases in veterinary species.

“I see teaching immunology and internal medicine as only one part of what I do.  We are training the next generation of community leaders in South Carolina.  These veterinarians will return to their communities across the state and will be respected ambassadors for science and education. The most meaningful impact I envision is watching as the new PCVM graduates become leaders in their communities across the state.”

Outside of work, Fogle enjoys spending time outdoors and being with his family and pets.

“My wife, Callie, is also a veterinarian and PCVM faculty member. We have two great kids in high school. We have two dogs, two cats and one horse. I love any activity that gets me outside: golf, fishing, hunting, coaching youth soccer, boating and canoeing.”
