How Meghan Brown ’20 found her perfect fit at Heirloom

Following in her mom’s footsteps

Meghan Brown ’20 grew up in Summerville, South Carolina, attending Clemson Football games for as long as she could remember. Her mom had also graduated from Clemson with a degree in accounting, and when Brown was deciding what college to attend, the choice was obvious for her: she would follow in her mom’s footsteps.

Coincidentally enough, the same dorms her mom had lived in as a student, Brown also lived in as a first-year student. They walked through the same halls in Sirine, made life-long friendships and graduated as business majors.

“It was really cool being able to see and experience a lot of the same things my mom did as a student,” Brown says. “Although a lot was different when I was there with new buildings and other additions, that feeling you get when you’re on campus doesn’t change.”

Beginning her career

Graduating from the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business with her marketing degree in the middle of the pandemic, Brown, like many of her peers, wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do next. She spent time in Charleston, where she found work as a social media coordinator through family connections at a boat shop.

As she began thinking about her next move, she decided to reach out to a company she interned with during her time as a student. She was offered a job and moved to Nashville to begin her career as an assistant account executive. She loved the city, the work and the people. The most rewarding part for her was watching how fast the company grew, acquiring more employees and an office space.

Still, with her family back in South Carolina, she ultimately decided Greenville is where she wanted to be. “Even though I loved my company, it was just a little too far from home. I wanted to go to my nieces’ birthday parties, spend time with my family and be there for the little moments in between. So, I found a job in Greenville and moved back to South Carolina.”

Family values

For two years, Brown continued work as an account executive for an agency in Greenville, but eventually realized she wanted to step away from the agency world, and the perfect opportunity presented itself in a phone call.

“It’s kind of funny how it happened,” Brown laughs. “Heirloom was an account I managed, and I grew close to them. It’s a family business, and I just loved their environment. One day, I was talking to one of the owners, and that conversation landed me an interview and eventually the job I’m at today. It’s a great job at a great company, and I couldn’t ask for better.”

Founded by Allyn and Sheree Moseley in 1994 and now led by their three sons, Heirloom is a two-generation, family-owned company in Greenville that crafts and installs custom staircases, lighting, furniture, and more. Brown is the project coordinator at Heirloom, and her work encompasses everything from social media to website updates.

One of her favorite parts of the job has been getting to return to Clemson’s campus in a professional capacity. Heirloom has contributed to several campus projects, including Tillman, Samuel J. Cadden Chapel and the Wilbur O. and Ann Powers College of Business.

“It’s really special to be part of projects at Clemson now, not just as a former student, but as a professional,” Brown says. “Coming back to Greenville helped me find the balance I was looking for: meaningful work, a great team, and a life that feels like home.”
