Fresh vegetables are a staple of healthy diets, but producing them requires constant innovation to stay ahead of plant diseases, pests and other growing challenges. Research that helps develop hardier, more productive crops is critical to keeping locally grown produce on the table. Patrick “Pat” Wechter is a vegetable crop researcher and plant pathologist, Wechter provides expertise on vegetable breeding, disease resistance, cucurbit genetics and the production challenges affecting specialty crop growers across the Southeast.

Bio

Before joining Clemson, Wechter was a research scientist in plant pathology and bacteriology with the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service, where he specialized in phytopathology, molecular genetics and vegetable crop improvement. His research has focused on developing improved watermelon, brassica and cucumber germplasm with enhanced resistance to economically significant diseases and environmental stressors.

As director of the Coastal Research and Education Center, Wechter leads research and outreach efforts that address the evolving needs of South Carolina agriculture. Through collaborations with growers, industry partners and fellow researchers, he advances practical solutions that strengthen agricultural productivity and food-system resilience across the Southeast.

Wechter earned both a Ph.D. and Master of Science in plant pathology from Clemson University. and a Bachelor of Science in biology from Winthrop University. Throughout his career, he has focused on connecting scientific discovery with real-world agricultural challenges through Clemson’s land-grant mission of research, teaching and Extension.
