Bio
Christopher Cox is an academic library leader and higher education administrator whose work focuses on advancing Clemson Libraries, expanding access to information and strengthening collaborations across institutions and communities. Cox oversees six libraries: R.M. Cooper Library, Gunnin Architecture Library, the Education Media Center, Special Collections and Archives, and branch libraries at CU-ICAR in Greenville and the Charleston Design Center. He leads strategic initiatives that support the University’s research mission and student success while positioning Clemson Libraries among the nation’s leading research libraries. At Clemson, Cox supports thousands of students, faculty, staff and researchers through collections, digital resources and innovative services. He has emphasized the evolving role of academic libraries as hubs for research, collaboration and emerging technologies, including AI, data services and digital scholarship. Under his leadership, Clemson Libraries has pursued major milestones, including acceptance into the prestigious Association of Research Libraries (ARL), a recognition of the University’s growing research impact and library excellence.
Cox’s work emphasizes collaboration — between libraries, museums and academic institutions — to expand access to knowledge and strengthen public engagement with history and scholarship. His leadership continues to shape Clemson Libraries as a forward-looking organization that supports teaching, research and community impact across South Carolina and beyond.
His career reflects a sustained commitment to modernizing library services, enhancing scholarly communication and aligning library strategy with institutional priorities. He joined Clemson in 2018 following senior leadership roles at multiple universities, including serving as dean of library services at the University of Northern Iowa and dean of libraries at Western Washington University.
Beyond campus, Cox is an active leader in regional and national library organizations. He has served as chair of the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL), a consortium supporting resource sharing across the state’s higher education institutions, and as chair of the Upcountry History Museum Board of Directors, reflecting his commitment to preserving and promoting regional history and culture. He is also a past president of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, one of the nation’s largest research library consortia.
