Advancement

The monthly “Elevate Well-Being” blog series shares thoughts and reflections of Clemson Well-Being Council members and University faculty, staff and students. Our April 2026 blog is courtesy Senior Vice President for Advancement Brian J. O’Rourke.

One of the greatest privileges of working as Senior Vice President for Advancement is witnessing the powerful connection between our campus community and the people who believe deeply in our mission. Every day, alumni, friends and partners choose to invest in this University because of the impact they see happening through our students, our programs and the dedication of our faculty and staff. The spirit of Fiercely Forward reflects our shared commitment to shaping a stronger future — for our students, our communities and the world. To be Fiercely Forward, we must also be fiercely well.

Well-being is not only an individual pursuit, but also something we cultivate together as a community. Faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends contribute to an environment where people feel supported, inspired and connected to a larger purpose. When individuals feel valued and energized in their work, our collective impact grows.

Every day across campus, I see the power of that shared purpose. Faculty advancing discovery and mentoring students. Staff creating the systems and support that keep our University moving forward. Students pursuing their passions and preparing to make their mark on the world. Alumni and friends investing their time, talent and treasures because they believe in what happens here.

Within the Division of Advancement, we have been intentional in striving to build a culture that prioritizes well-being and connection. One way we do this is through the Paw Print Award, a peer-nominated recognition given to a staff member who demonstrates a PAWsitive culture by building strong relationships across departments and embodying Clemson’s values of integrity, respect and excellence. It’s a meaningful reminder that how we treat one another matters.

We also foster a culture of well-being through moments that bring our team together — our annual retreat, quarterly community of practice and monthly newsletters that highlight resources, successes and opportunities to stay connected.

Just as philanthropy fuels scholarships, research and programs, investing in the well-being of our people strengthens the foundation that makes that progress possible.

As we continue to move Fiercely Forward, I hope we will all embrace the idea of being fiercely well — supporting one another, celebrating the people around us and remembering that the strength of our University begins with its people. As I like to say, until further notice, celebrate everything!
