Army and Air Force ROTC commission 33 Lieutenants in joint ceremony

Clemson University’s Army and Air Force ROTC units held a joint ceremony to commission 33 Second Lieutenants on May 11, 2022. Eighteen students received commissions into the U.S. Army, 14 students received commissions into the U.S. Air Force and one student received commission into the U.S. Space Force. The guest speaker for the ceremony was Lieutenant General L. Neil Thurgood. He is the Director for Hypersonics, Directed Energy, Space and rapid Acquisition, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology), Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.

Following the commissioning ceremonies, the newly appointed lieutenants participated in a Silver Dollar Salute on Clemson University’s Military Heritage Plaza. The ceremony marks the first salute received by the officer from an enlisted member. As a sign of mutual respect, the officer presents the enlisted member with a silver dollar.
