Amod Ogale of Clemson University named Fellow of SAMPE

Amod Ogale of Clemson University was inducted as a Fellow by the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering (SAMPE) in an awards ceremony held in Dallas on Oct. 15, 2018.  Ogale is the Dow Chemical Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and the Director of the Center for Advanced Engineering Fibers and Films.

The award represents prestigious recognition “for distinguished contributions in the fields of materials and processes,” according to the society.

Ogale was among three Fellows inducted this year. He was the only faculty member to receive this recognition, while the other two were researchers from industry.

David Bruce, chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, congratulated Ogale and noted, “The Fellow Award confirms that Dr. Ogale is a leading scholar in his field and that he brings world-class excellence to the department.”

Ogale’s association with SAMPE goes back 34 years when he first became a SAMPE student member and served as the first vice-president of then newly formed student chapter at the Center for Composite Materials, University of Delaware. Recently, he helped establish the Clemson student shapter and serves as its faculty advisor.

His research expertise includes microstructure evolution during processing of carbon fibers and composites. Ogale and his research group pioneered the use of continuous and discontinuous reinforcements in photo-resins for 3-D printing. Results from his paper, published as early as October 1991 in SAMPE Quarterly, were highlighted on the journal front page. Over the past two decades, Ogale and his group have focused on the development of high strength carbon fibers, polymers, and composites using novel precursors, including those from cost-competitive and bio-renewable sources.

Ogale is also a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers and the recipient of the 2013 Graffin Lecturer Award from the American Carbon Society and 2016 Composites Educator of the Year Award from SPE.

He has published six book chapters, one patent, over 100 refereed papers, and served on the editorial review board of SAMPE Quarterly. He has been a principal or co- Investigator on over 50 research grants worth over $37 million. He has developed and taught numerous courses, including specialized ones on high performance fibers and composites. He has developed and taught numerous courses, including 3 specialized ones on high performance fibers and composites.  Ogale has advised 49 graduate students and nine post-doctoral fellows during his 32 years at Clemson University. His students have taken up positions as university faculty and researchers at national labs and multi-national companies working with advanced materials and petrochemicals.
