Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
Welcome to the New Year and the Spring semester. I hope your winter break was restful and that you are energized for all the possibilities and exciting things to come in 2026. There is something really special about the first day of class. Perhaps that’s because I’ve spent much of my life in academia, but I hope that as you settle into the semester today and throughout this week, you feel that same excitement and joy that comes with a new beginning.
The past year brought significant change both for higher education broadly and for our Clemson community. I am sure this year will also bring its own opportunities and challenges. What matters most is that we’ll navigate what’s ahead together. With outstanding students, talented faculty and dedicated staff, Clemson continues to make a significant impact on the lives of people across the state, the nation and beyond, through our shared mission of education, research and service.
On January 1, we were pleased to officially welcome our new Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Cole Smith. We are thrilled that Provost Smith has returned home to Clemson, and I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to move the University forward.
I also began my service as the Interim President of Clemson University as we launch a national search for our 16th president. It is truly an honor to serve during this important time of transition. I am committed to listening, being transparent, and engaging in open and honest conversations with you. I look forward to being out and about on campus and look forward to many opportunities to visit and interact with you.
For 136 years, Clemson University has been changing lives and making a positive difference in our communities across the state of South Carolina and beyond. As we begin a new year, we will continue that legacy – one student, one research discovery and one person at a time.
Thank you for all you do to make Clemson University such a special place and, in my opinion, the best University in the country. Together, let’s make 2026 an incredible year and continue to lead the way Fiercely Forward.
