A Message from Chair Kim Wilkerson

Dear Clemson Community,

Today marks a deeply meaningful moment for Clemson University as the Board of Trustees honors President James P. Clements, who will conclude his remarkable tenure and retire from the presidency on December 31. While this transition brings a sense of sadness, it also offers an opportunity to celebrate an extraordinary leader whose vision and heart have shaped Clemson for more than a decade.

When Jim became our 15th president 12 years ago, he brought a bold strategic vision and an unwavering belief in what Clemson could achieve. Under his leadership, we have reached heights that once seemed unimaginable – record enrollment, historic fundraising, national recognition for academic excellence and transformative growth across our campuses. Jim’s ability to lead with grace, strength and a deep love for this University has left an indelible mark on Clemson history.

We also honor First Lady Beth Clements, whose energy and compassion have touched countless lives. Her advocacy for ClemsonLIFE has opened doors for young people with intellectual disabilities and their families, creating opportunities that will endure for generations. Together, Jim and Beth have given not only their talents but their hearts to Clemson, and our community is stronger because of their leadership and service.

At today’s meeting, the Board of Trustees took three important steps to ensure a smooth transition.

We have appointed Provost Bob Jones as Interim President effective January 1. With more than a decade of experience as provost, Bob’s leadership and deep knowledge of Clemson will provide stability during this period. We also approved the formation of a Presidential Search Committee and the selection of an executive search firm to help us find Clemson’s 16th president. Our goal is to have a new leader in place by Fall 2026.

We will keep you informed throughout this process and invite you to stay engaged. In the coming weeks, we will launch a dedicated website with updates and resources about the search.

Though we will miss Jim’s leadership dearly, Clemson stands in one of its strongest positions ever. His legacy will serve as a foundation for the next chapter in our story – a chapter we will write together with confidence and optimism. Thank you for your trust and support as we honor Jim and Beth and look forward to the future.

Sincerely,
