The U.S. Department of Education requires each institution of higher education to annually make its alcohol and other drug policy available to every student.
Clemson University is committed to promoting an environment of well-being. Students who use alcohol and other drugs assume a responsibility to comply with South Carolina laws and University policies, to make decisions that reduce their personal risks and to consider the health and safety risks posed to others. The University provides education, programs and policies designed to create an environment that fosters well-being and empowers students and employees to make responsible decisions relating to alcohol and other drug consumption.
The negative physical and mental effects of the use of alcohol and other drugs are well documented. Use of these drugs may cause blackouts, poisoning, overdose and death; physical and psychological dependence; damage to vital organs such as the brain, heart and liver; inability to learn and remember information; and psychological problems, including depression, psychosis and severe anxiety.
In addition to the negative physical and emotional outcomes, there may be serious disciplinary ramifications. Students who violate the University’s Alcohol and Drug Use Policy are subject to discipline as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Where those actions also violate state and/or federal law, students and employees are subject to legal consequences as well.
We care about your health and well-being. Clemson provides the following student resources related to alcohol and other drugs:
- Healthy Campus is one of three departments in Student Health Services. We provide population-level risk reduction and holistic well-being to our students. We create an environment where students thrive and develop lifelong patterns for health and well-being.
- Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is located in Redfern Health Center and is the University’s only facility for personal counseling, psychological testing, outreach and consultation. To reach CAPS, call 864-656-2451 (select option 2 for an after-hours counselor).
- The Assessment, Choices, Treatment and Transitions (ACTT) program through CAPS provides assessment, prevention, intervention and treatment services to reduce the risks associated with substance use and abuse within the Clemson University family. The ACTT program strives to develop student awareness, knowledge and skills to increase personal and social responsibility in order to remove obstacles for student success. The program also emphasizes a student’s responsibility for their self-care and encourages them to engage throughout the assessment and treatment process.
- Clemson All-In Recovery (CAIR) is a student organization aiming to support students interested in recovery from addictions, allies of recovery and/or anyone affected by addiction. The goal is to create a safe and healthy peer-support environment to discuss problems and find solutions.
- CARE Network is a service of the Office of Advocacy and Success offering individualized assistance for all Clemson students by assessing needs, identifying support networks and offering referrals to campus and community resources. Anyone who is concerned about a student should complete a referral form so outreach and support can be provided to the student. If the student or situation requires immediate attention or there is an emergency of any kind, please call 911.
- Clemson University Police Department is located at 124 Ravenel Center Place in Seneca, SC, 29678. Call 911 for emergencies; email police@clemson.edu or call 864-656-2222 for non-emergencies.
