The College of Education welcomes new faculty in fall 2019

Clemson’s College of Education begins the fall semester with several new faculty members. College leadership is excited to welcome these faculty members, who will enable student learning and contribute to the planned growth of the college. The new faculty members by department are as follows:

Education and Human Development

Liz Boyd
Liz Boyd

Liz Boyd will serve as a visiting clinical assistant professor in the education and human development department’s counselor education program. She has worked in higher education for just over a decade, primarily in housing and residence life and orientation. More recently, Boyd has worked as a counseling intern in clinical settings. In this role, she has worked with clients of all ages in various settings, from crisis homes to hospitals. Her research interests include women’s health and positive counseling. Boyd earned a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision, an Ed.S. in counseling and a master’s degree in higher education from Old Dominion University. She also earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Radford University.

Fun Fact: Like many in the Clemson area two summers ago, Boyd witnessed the total solar eclipse. However, she was in Sylva, North Carolina. She said the incredible experience has continued to leave an impression on her.

Christy Brown will serve as clinical assistant professor of quantitative methodology in the education and human development department. Brown served as a high school math teacher in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia from 2004 to 2008 where she taught statistics and AP statistics. She served also as coordinator for the Statistical Methods I course in the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Clemson University from 2013 to 2019. Brown’s research interests include statistics education and applying statistical methods in educational contexts. She earned a Ph.D. in quantitative methods in educational psychology, a master’s degree in statistics and a bachelor’s degree in math education from the University of Georgia.

Fun Fact: Brown loves to Jazzercise early! She can usually be found weekday mornings at 5:45 a.m. classes.

Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens
Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens

Golnaz Arastoopour Irgens will serve as an assistant professor in the education and human development department. Arastoopour Irgens previously served as a math teacher at Orr Academy High School in Chicago as well as a computer science teacher at Campus Middle School in Urbana, Illinois. Her research interests include learning analytics, inclusive design of digital learning environments and measuring and modeling connected learning. Arastoopour Irgens earned a Ph.D. and a master’s degree in learning sciences from the University of Wisconsin, a master’s degree in mathematics education from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois.

Fun Fact: Arastoopour Irgens has hiked in Las Alpujarras Mountains in Spain and biked with wild monkeys and pigs in Pulau Ubin, Singapore.

Brooke Wymer
Brooke Wymer

Brooke Wymerwill serve as a clinical assistant professor in clinical mental health counseling in our education and human development department. Wymer is a clinically-licensed, trauma-focused therapist and supervisor who specializes in child sexual trauma treatment and parenting support interventions. Her previous work experiences include providing and supervising treatment services to children who have experienced abuse and other forms of trauma. Wymer is a trained forensic interviewer for investigations of child abuse and has prior teaching experience at the graduate and undergraduate level in the disciplines of counselor education and social work. Her research interests include secondary traumatic stress, counselor wellness, trauma-focused supervision and child abuse prevention. She earned a Ph.D. in counselor education and a master’s degree in social work from the University of South Carolina, and she earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Columbia College.

Fun Fact: Wymer says she is “small but strong” and loves to lift weights.

Educational and Organizational Leadership Development

Janna Magette
Janna Magette

Janna Magette will serve as a lecturer in the educational and organizational leadership department with a focus in the athletic leadership discipline. Magette previously served as assistant women’s basketball coach at Francis Marion and UNC-Charlotte. She has also served as director of basketball operations at the University of Florida and executive director of Girls Place Inc., an after-school athletics and summer day camp. Magette’s research interests include authentic leadership and gender equity in sport. She earned a Ph.D. in leadership development from the University of Florida. She has also earned a master’s degree from the University of Florida and a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College.

Fun Fact: Magette played college basketball while majoring in religion.

Noelle Paufler
Noelle A. Paufler

Noelle A. Paufler will serve as an assistant professor in the educational and organizational leadership department. She has experience as a high school social studies teacher, district administrator, applied researcher in high-need districts and schools, and most recently as an assistant professor of educational leadership. Her research interests include K-12 educational policy, specifically how educational leaders enact policy into practice and its impact on teachers and students. Her current research examines the lived experiences of evaluators and pre-/in-service teachers and the impact and consequences of accountability policy reified in teacher evaluation systems in K-12 and higher education settings. Paufler earned a Ph.D. in educational policy and evaluation from Arizona State University.

Fun Fact: Paufler once slept through a tornado.
