The 2021 Staff Senate Scholarship Sprint for Success event is open for registration.

Organized by the staff senate scholarship committee, the event supports scholarships for children of Clemson staff employees. The committee raises money for the Staff Senate scholarship fund, which provides fifteen $2,500 scholarships each year to student family members of the University’s staff. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit and financial need.

Shelly Geer, assistant director of internal operations for the Nieri Center, is one of many whose family has benefitted directly from these scholarships. Her oldest daughter, Corey, was a recipient of the Staff Senate scholarship 10 years ago. As a family member of a Clemson employee, all it took was a completed federal student aid application and a letter confirming her status.

“My daughter chose a degree in nursing and has been an RN for the past seven years and a travel nurse for the past four,” Geer said. “This past year, she has been a frontline worker in the COVID-19 pandemic, first in Seattle, Washington, and now Los Angeles.”

Geer credits the scholarship for helping her daughter reach her goals and encourages people to participate and donate for a great cause.

“By participating in the virtual run/walk, you are making a positive impact on a Clemson employee’s family. Every donation, no matter the amount, helps fund the puzzle pieces of financial aid of an employee’s child, helping them achieve their goal of a college degree,” Geer said.

Morgan Mcmanus, who is a two-time recipient of the Staff Senate Scholarship, credits the scholarship for allowing her to pursue more opportunities as a student. Mcmanus’s father, Michael, serves as the Clemson Extension District Director for the Pee Dee region and has been with Clemson Cooperate Extension Service for 24 years. He is also a Clemson alumnus, having earned his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and a master’s degree in Agricultural Education

“Having more financial stability through scholarships allowed me to get more involved on campus and truly embrace what it means to be a Clemson Tiger,” McManus said.

“Coming to Clemson was always a dream for me because my dad showed me Clemson isn’t just four years of undergrad. It’s a lifetime thing.”

This virtual walk/run event offers one mile, 5K and 10K distances to choose from and is a community and family-friendly event supporting the health and well-being of the Clemson family. All proceeds go directly to support the Staff Senate Endowed Scholarship. All event finishers will be entered into a prize drawing after the event.

The registration deadline for the events is April 15. You can register for the event here and through the University Events Calendar.
