College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences receives first Cornerstone Gift
The Norvilles are continuing their support of Clemson with a transformational $2.5 million gift to the College of Engineering, Computing and Applied Sciences (CECAS). It is the first Academic Cornerstone gift for the college and the eighth for the University. The Norvilles’ gift will further strengthen CECAS, South Carolina’s leader in educating engineers. Addressing all of the college’s top priorities as outlined by its dean, funds will support student scholarships, endowed professorships and facilities in the college.

Clemson materials research in quantum computing may lead to computational speeds never seen before
Clemson University College of Science professor Joe Kolis recently received a $550,000 Department of Energy grant to rationally design new quantum materials from rare earth oxides. An expert in hydrothermal synthesis, Kolis will use a combination of water, high pressure and extreme heat to make new compounds with magnetic and other properties that are suitable for quantum computing and data storage.

Sensor research underscores Clemson University’s leadership in technology for extreme environments
Clemson University researchers are developing three new sensors designed to withstand two of humanity’s harshest environments, the intense heat inside power plants and the tremendous pressure at the bottom of hydraulic fracturing wells. The research, led by Hai Xiao, is aimed at advancing the technology behind fossil fuels, which produce much of the nation’s power. The ultimate goal is to generate power more efficiently while lowering emissions and using fewer resources.
