Natatorium to close temporarily Aug. 1 at Fike Recreation Center

CLEMSON — The natatorium located in Fike Recreation Center will close temporarily on Aug. 1 as Clemson University officials prepare to conduct a safety and feasibility study. The closure will allow time for the consideration of maintenance and renovation needs and the results of the study will be used to determine both the best use of the space moving forward and the aquatic needs of the campus community.

“In accordance with the university’s strategic plan and our goal of providing current and future generations of students with the best possible space for recreational opportunities, we believe now is the appropriate time to conduct a study of our infrastructure as it relates to the natatorium,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Almeda Jacks.

“Our Student Government has heard a number of concerns voiced by students and organizations regarding the pool, and we understand and sympathize,” said Logan Young, CUSG president. “From a practicality standpoint, and in the best long-term interest for recreational access for students, the temporary closure of the pool for assessment and future planning is the right decision to be made at this time.”

The natatorium will remain open through July 31, 2019, accommodating the community’s Clemson Aquatics Team through the end of its temporary relocation agreement. The team will return to the Central-Clemson Recreation Center beginning Aug. 1. Members of the university’s Student Affairs division will continue to work with other community and campus groups who utilize the pool to find alternate locations during the temporary closure.
