Jeffrey Fine has been named senior associate dean of the Clemson University Honors College, effective immediately.

In his new role, Fine will provide leadership in developing, innovating, and supporting academic, co-curricular and operational initiatives that contribute to the Honors College’s academic and inclusive excellence goals.

Dr. Fine’s depth and breadth of experience in Honors education is unparalleled and exceeded only by his commitment to student development and success. I’m excited to work with him to realize our shared vision of a Clemson Honors education that is student-focused, inclusive and accessible, while also emphasizing engaged, interdisciplinary learning to confront pressing problems.

SARAH WINSLOW, DEAN, CLEMSON UNIVERSITY HONORS COLLEGE

Fine, a political science professor, has extensive Honors experience. He has taught 18 Honors seminars related to politics and public policy and led the Honors thesis program in the Political Science Department since 2008. Since 2009, he has reviewed Honors applications and been involved the selection process for the National Scholars Program (NSP), which offers unmatched learning experiences to a select group of high academic and community service-oriented incoming students every year. He has also chaired an NSP interview panel every year since 2010.

He currently leads the Dixon Global Policy Scholars (GPS) program, an interdisciplinary opportunity that includes specialized coursework, seminars, and workshops, a study travel experience to Europe, and support in applying for major scholarships and graduate school.

Fine has mentored and advised Honors students in different disciplines through the Dixon GPS program, including the University’s first-ever Rhodes Scholar, and through his role on the Selection Committee for Clemson Nominees for Major Fellowships.

He also has a strong focus on inclusive excellence, having represented his department on the College of Behavioral, Social and Health Sciences (CBSHS) Inclusive Excellence Committee, which spearheads initiatives to diversify faculty, staff, and curriculum opportunities within the college. Fine also participated as a facilitator during faculty training for TIGERS Advance, which seeks to promote faculty gender equity.

Four years ago, Fine worked with the Office of Inclusion and Diversity and the Gayle family to develop an opportunity for underrepresented students called the Tyrone Gayle Scholars program, which funds two CBSHS students annually as they pursue summer internships in politics. Fine leads the yearly recruitment and selection process, facilitates on-campus programming and serves as an informal mentor.

Fine also has been involved with a key pipeline to higher education through his work with the Advanced Placement Program (AP) U.S. Government & Politics course for the College Board and Educational Testing Services. Between 2018-2022, Fine served as the Higher Ed Co-Chair of the Test Development Committee, working with the College Board and Educational Testing Service

to write exam questions that approximately 350,000 students take each year. He also helped finalize and refine the course’s curriculum with the objective of better matching the content of introductory political science courses taught at the university-level.

Some of my most rewarding experiences at Clemson have been teaching and mentoring Honors students.  I’m so excited for the opportunity to help lead the Honors College, and look forward to working with Dean Winslow, the Honors staff, and faculty across the university as we seek to enhance the undergraduate experience of our students.
