James Traut named associate vice president for Enterprise Risk Management

James Traut has been named associate vice president for Enterprise Risk Management. In this role, Traut will lead the identification of risks and opportunities to the University, while collaborating with leaders across the University to mitigate identified risks to the Clemson’s mission, vision, strategic and operational plans. Traut, responsible for developing Clemson’s annual Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) plan and for providing a systematic and disciplined approach, will also promote compliance and best practices across all levels of the University. He will provide oversight of the University’s Business Continuity and Security Planning and of the Office of Risk Management.

Traut succeeds Charles Tegen, who recently retired, and he arrives to Clemson from Pittsburgh, PA where he was the president and founder of Risk Transparency Inc. Jim was also an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy.

Traut’s business and research initiatives have enabled organizations to implement innovative key risk and reward awareness and management methodologies to create and protect value. He brings to Clemson a wealth of expertise in the areas of strategy development and execution, operational governance, control, cultural, ethics, legal, and compliance efforts for near and long-term performance and resilience.

Traut has served on the North Carolina State University ERM Advisory Board and the AICPA Advisory Panel for Risk Management and Internal Control. He is a certified public accountant (CPA) in Pennsylvania and a chartered global management accountant. Traut began his career at KPMG and also worked for the H. J. Heinz Company for 24 years in various global strategy, accounting, risk, control, audit, due diligence and ethics leadership roles. His last role at Heinz was global vice president enterprise reputation and risk management and ethics and compliance. In 2010, Treasury & Risk Magazine recognized him as one of the “Top 100 Most Influential People in Finance.”

Traut’s position becomes effective Dec. 16, 2019.
