Dr. Altheia Richardson, Associate Vice President for Strategic Diversity Leadership at Clemson, has been named the inaugural Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging at Newberry College beginning in May. She will remain in her current role at Clemson until April 28.

“While we will miss her, we are proud of Dr. Richardson for this next inaugural role and will always be grateful for her outstanding service to Clemson,” stated Max Allen, SVP, Chief of Staff to the President, and Interim Chief Diversity Officer at Clemson. “Her leadership throughout her long career at Clemson has had a profound impact on many faculty, staff and students. Newberry College is getting a proven administrator as their inaugural chief diversity officer.”

Richardson most recently led the Strategic Planning for Inclusive Excellence Initiative at Clemson University, a cross-college, cross-division endeavor that also includes Faculty and Staff Senates, commissions and resources to help units with individual plans that tie to an overarching vision for inclusive excellence.

During her time here, Richardson helped to lead the launch of the diversity office at Clemson, the Harvey and Lucinda Gantt Multicultural Center and multiple programs to enhance recruitment and retention among high school and college students.

Commenting on her time at Clemson and new opportunity, Richardson stated: “I have had the distinct pleasure of working with so many amazing students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members over my 31 years at Clemson University. This has allowed me to develop meaningful relationships that have facilitated the work I’ve accomplished for the university. I will treasure those relationships and look forward to developing new ones at Newberry.”

As mentioned, Dr. Richardson will remain in her role at Clemson until April 28.
